What is Kopi Luwak?
Kopi Luwak coffee, also known as Civet coffee or Kape Alamid, is coffee made from the poop of a Palm Civet. Kopi = coffee, Luwak = Palm Civet.
Yep, that’s right, it’s coffee that has passed through the digestive tract of the cat-sized mammal common in the Philippines & Vietnam. The Palm Civet will eat the coffee berries, and the beans pass through undigested.
The inner bean of the berry is not digested, but it is believed that enzymes in the stomach of the civet add to the coffee’s flavor by breaking down the proteins that give coffee its bitter taste. The beans are excreted still covered in some inner layers of the cherry, and locals then gather them and sell them to dealers. The beans are washed, and given only a light roast so as to not destroy the complex flavors which develop through the whole process. – Wikipedia
Why would anyone drink Kopi Luwak?
That I cannot answer. And yet, it is the single most expensive coffee in the world, selling at $75 USD per quarter pound.
The coffee is popular in the US and Japan, and is now available online. I’ve no personal interest in trying it, but if you do – go for it.

When I mentioned that the world most expensive coffee is from an animal pooh, I received sarcastic remarks. So I did some research and done up a webpage just to prove my point. It is from this that I learnt that Kopi Luwak and Kape Alamid is the same thing ie the coffee beans passed throught the Common Palm Civet digestive tracts.
In Indonesia it is known as Kopi Luwak while in the Philippines it is Kape Alamid. Read more about Kopi Luwak at this webpage http://coffeespectra.com/kopiluwak.html

I checked the certificate posted by Paradise Coffee for authenticity, and found it was issued by Sucofindo. PLEASE BE AWARE, the certificate that they claimed was issued by the Indonesian government is by no means a reliable source. I know many employees at Sucofindo, and it is a very corrupt organization. I was working at a big corporation in Indonesia as a Senior Export Manager for more than 7 years; and, it is very easy to get some documentation to smooth your way into business. Paradise Coffee is bogus; they just changed their website this year, and claimed that they were the ones who were working with Oprah. Paradise Coffee is not telling the truth! This company operates by some clowns from Indonesia, who do not hesitate to lie in order to try and make money. THE FACT: Oprah Winfrey never has worked directly with any Indonesian corporation; the show in 2003 was an effort by Linda Nederman from the Coffee Critic.

I agree with Regina. First they do not have the facilities to analyse the beans to see if an enzymatic reaction has occured. Second, Paradise Coffee has stolen the artwork on their site from the American company “Raven’s Brew.” They were the largest importers of Kopi Luwak and they are based out of the US. Just google Raven’s Brew and you will see what I mean.
As for the Philippine company I am not sure what to say as they are new, were in the vinegar business before among other ventures and I believe at least one of the owners comes from Europe and is looking for a way to make an income. Could be legit and I do not want to slander anyone but I think it is just very easy to scam people with this coffee. The one company who I would trust is an internet company out of Australia. I have actually spoken to him by email and he seems very honest and sincere. In addition he has a certificate of authenticity from Dr. Marcone who is the world’s only expert on this coffee. It is NOT Sucofindo. Dr. Marcone has tested supposed “Kopi Luwak” from Vietnam and found that the it was only cocoa powder and coffee. He asked for samples from some Indonesian suppliers (not sure who) and they never replied. You would think they would run to him to get his certification! Anyway here is their website: http://www.animalcoffee.com/
Hope this helps.

To answer Craig’s question. In terms of protein depletion (what makes Kopi Luwak unique due to the enzymatic reaction) it does matter if it is caged or wild. However, all Kopi Luwak sold is wild. There may be the odd person with a cage civet but considering you need about two thousand beans (1000 cherries) to make a pound a coffee you are not going to get any commercial production out of a few civets. Furthermore, Civets are cannibalistic so if you were to try to pen them together they would kill one another.
Bottom line: don’t worry about it

They are based out of California, and you can save money on shipping.
PS: Very nice people too!

The http://kopiluwakonline.com site linked to above is also Paradise coffee, they were (are?)selling coffee in exactly the same packaging on their ‘buy-kopi-luwak’site. It seems the site above is distributing for them in the US
November 30th, 2006 at 12:10 pm
Tim,
No, KopiLuwakOnline.com is not Paradise Coffee.
Paradise Coffee seems to try and fool everybody.
They are using similar keywords to catch peoples attention.
Type http://www.KopiLuwakOnline.com on your browser
and you will get into the right website.
I just ordered a few more packages from http://www.KopiLuwakOnline.com for Christmas gifts.
All of my co-workers really loved the Kopi Luwak coffee, after I brought it to work last month.

Don,
You talked about Dr. Marcone, could you please let me know how I can contact him? I’m one of Indonesian coffee suppliers, and I have this kind of coffee in stock. No, I would not try to sell it here. I just want to ask Dr. Marcone to test it. Thx.

Pls do not trust anyone who claim their Kopi Luwak are authentic, i know these people. Kopi Luwak are genuine product from Indonesia, only trust Indonesian selling this coffee & buy directly from Indonesia. I also know the guy named Marcone, he ask for some money to justify the Kopi Luwak are authentic or not. I believe Paradise Coffee are the truth, they own their own plantation, also they have high res photos & video detail of how processing the Kopi Luwak.

Only believe for what you see, do not trust with somebody say it or even a crap of paper !
April 12th, 2007 at 9:33 pm
I knew the Aussie guy who own the animalcoffee.com, he bought from our farmer the Kopi Luwak beans with only IDR 250,000 per kilogram !! or equal to less than US$ 24 per kilo, can you believe it !! That’s why i’m no longer his supplier anymore, he cheat on our farmer here in Sumatera !! Also the Kopi Luwak sold in kopiluwakonline.com are not the same with the product sold at paradise-coffee.com, they are fake product ! Only sold IDR 20,000 here in Jakarta’s supermarket or equal to less than US$ 2 !!!!
April 13th, 2007 at 6:26 pm
I found paradise-coffee.com’s video clip about how to process the kopi luwak step by step, you should consider this before buying this type of coffee !! go to http://kopiluwak.zippyvideos.com

Thomas,
This is not the place to promote your own business. We can see that you have been abusing this blog website. You should be ashamed of yourself for copying other people’s artwork and abusing basic business etiquette. Paradise-coffee.com have been illegally copying other people’s artwork and they have the unbelievable nerve to place Oprah Winfreys picture on their website. You are just a “thief” and a scammer on the Internet.
Guys, in my opinion… we shouldn’t deal with this thief at all. Some of their customers have posted their unsatisfactory comments about the product that they have purchased from paradise-coffee.com, and guess what… those comments just disappeared, and they have disabled that features now. Untrustworthy people!
July 22nd, 2007 at 3:34 pm
I have mailed Paradise Coffee.Com & start some small research on their website & i found there are no illegal copyrighted materials that Michael’s claim about it, i think Michael were trying to start black campaign against our fellow Indonesian. Michael, why don’t you tell your own government to back off from Iraq by killing thousands of innocent people there, i think that’s more important so let us know who’s country has more ‘etiquette’ to do business ??

kopiluwakonline.com

Ok. So, where the heck should I try and find the real Kopi Luwak?!
November 20th, 2007 at 8:08 pm
Hi Rexy. I am a Filipino-Chinese and I have been travelling to Taiwan regularly to sell Civet (in Filipino called ALAMID) coffee under the brand of Coffee Alamid. And the Taiwanese loved them very much. This same brand is being sold at the in-flight of Japan Airlines.
If you search the net, you will also find a story/ research made by the BBC (British Broadcasting). There is also a video link on how the coffee is being picked. This is the real thing. We can invite you to the Philippines and see for yourself how we process this coffee.
Do email me (mtangchio@yahoo.com.ph) if you are interested to visit.

Can you advise the cost and cost of shipping to the UK?
August 19th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Hello Everyone,
Please beware of anybody claiming that they sell authentic Coffee Alamid from the Philippines. Kindly visit our website http://www.arengga.com .
There are also other companies in the US claiming they have alamid coffee. But the truth is, they have low grade, poor quality civet coffee, if it is indeed civet coffee at all.
Our company is all Filipino-owned. No foreign national sits on our board. However, we are highly featured by internationally based multi-media groups.
August 23rd, 2008 at 12:13 am
Winarto,
Is it possible to come to your plantation in Bali to see where you are getting the kopi luwak?
Thank you.

Hi Busby..
Yes “Luwak” is the Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language)word for asian palm civet and “Lubak” is how the balinese people call it (in bahasa Bali).
They are the same animal, “Paradoxurus hermafroditus”
Comon Palm Civets are found in Sumatra, Sulawesi, Java and Bali in the indonesian archipielago. If you need more info about Kopi Luwak please e mail me to altaso@hotmail.com

I have an internet business and have sold Kopi Luwak Coffee to a few of my customers. The taste is very "earthy" but not bitter in any way. I get my coffee directly from Indonesia, and the shippping is terrible (can take up to 4 weeks to arrive after ordering. I did considerable checking online before I used my source and I believe it to be the genuine article. At $190.00 us per pound I do not sell that much, but I use the same suplier that many in Japan (where most is sold) use. If you want the genuine article go to http://www.gourmetcoffee2you.com

My good friend since 3rd grade started a company during his service in the peace corps. This is 100% authentic. If you are looking for 100% authentic civet coffee, this is the real deal. Official Certificate of Authenticity is available upon request. As I said this was started while he was serving in the United States Peace Corps in the Phillipines. His work there was documented by the United States govt., the park in which the coffee grows was started with USAID grant money, and proceeds go toward a good cause. visit the website and see for yourself.

Oh and Civets are nocturnal animals who mostly do their hunting in the trees. To the best of my knowledge, arabica coffee beans fall to the ground when ripe, whereas robusta beans do not. If a civet is indeed choosing the ripest beans, it seems unlikely that it would be crawling on the ground for arabica, seeing as that the trees are its natural habitat. From what my friend has told me, the civets in the park choose to eat the robusta fruit, although there are arabica trees in the park. Not saying that some of these other companies aren’t necessarily authentic, it was just a thought that had crossed my mind. Perhaps some of them are not letting nature take its course. Caged Civets do seem to be a possibility. I’m not a civet expert, nor an expert on any of the companies that others have listed on this page -or their source of civet beans. Be very careful when purchasing this coffee. P.S. the coffee is friggin’ delicious!

All,
Yes, indeed so many suppliers here in Indonesia claiming that they have original Civet Coffee (Kopi Luwak), but the best deal you could have is to fly here to Indonesia(Sumatra Java, Bali) for a week or two, make some arrangements with them and see it with your very own eyes, at least once. Afterward, it’s up to you whether you could trust them for the next stages. Some of them are collectors who really collect from the farmers surrounding of their villages(coffee areas/villages that you can easily find here in Indonesia), and mostly it’s really from the wild.

Dear All
I personally can accepted all command about civet coffee, as my experience wild and caged civet coffee have a different about the taste,I also ever bought from many people’s who collected civet coffee beans, but only a few are really collected wild civet coffee beans from coffee plantation and surrounding the plantation, I spend a year for just can start to run this business, because I want it is a real wild civet coffee.
Due to very small volume amount about 25 kgs a month and it’s impossible that I established one company, I only sell to coffee lover, I roasted it in light, medium, medium dark roasted beans, pack by air valve packaging, cost USD 50 per 100 grams without delivery charges.
To enjoy a cup of coffee, first to know the taste of the coffee characteristic as the coffee body, creamy, flavor, aroma, unusual sweetness, sweet, after taste and the acidity depand of the type of roasting, and at last if you want to enjoy the it all you must have the equipment to make a cup of good taste coffee, by using coffee maker :siphon , mokka pot, or coffee machine.
For inquiry please contact civetcoffee@yahoo.co.id
Thanks and wishing you enjoy a cup of real and delicious civet coffee

the main problems are as i see them: the authenticity of the purveyed kopi-luwak beans and of course their proper cleaning, roasting, packaging, and transport. the first matter is, clearly, the primary one–and perhaps unsolvable: none of the sources or authenticating organizations, states and testing bodies appear reliable in the least–especially any assurances out of the United States of America, whether governmental or commercial. perhaps, it will be relatively–and i mean only relatively–safer to deal directly with an Indonesian agency carrying the approval of the government there–it is, after all, an Islamic country and has credibility as being backed up by the moral precepts of the religion having the greatest probity. The Phillippines are no better than Americans by whom they have been utterly corrupted.
wish we had direct Canadian buyers, carrying our government’s seal of approval, sourcing the beans in the country of origin.
